How to Repair Hairline Cracks

Repairing hairline cracks presents a unique challenge compared to standard chips or larger defects. The primary issue is that these cracks are often too narrow for the repair material to penetrate deeply. Even if the material is applied to the surface, the lack of a physical "key" or sufficient surface area inside the crack means the bond may be weak. For a repair material to adhere properly and withstand daily use, it typically requires a defect with a minimum width and depth of at least 1mm x 1mm.

Without this necessary volume, the repair material may sit only on the surface and peel off after curing. To ensure a permanent fix, the crack must be mechanically widened to create a "riverbed" or channel. This process exposes fresh material and provides a sufficient cavity for the resin to flow into, cure, and lock effectively with the substrate.

Application Steps

1

Preparation

Identify the extent of the hairline crack. Clean the surface to see the defect clearly.

2

Widening the Crack

Use a rotary tool (like a Dremel) or a small grinding bit to carefully widen the crack. Create a U-shaped or V-shaped channel along the entire length of the crack. Aim for at least 1mm in width and depth.

3

Safety & Control

Hold the rotary tool firmly with both hands to prevent it from slipping and scratching the surrounding polished area. We recommend applying masking tape along the edges of the crack to protect the surface.

4

Fill & Finish

Once widened, clean away all dust and debris. Proceed with the standard filling, curing, and polishing steps as outlined in your repair kit instructions.

Note: Rotary tools like Dremels are available at most hardware and DIY stores. If you are inexperienced, consider practicing on a scrap piece or seeking assistance to avoid accidental damage.
